Warning Signs Your Sewer Line Is Failing
Multiple drains backing up at once is the clearest sign. One slow drain is usually just a clog. When your toilet, tub, and sink are all sluggish or backing up together, the problem is further down the line.
Other signs to take seriously: sewage smell in your yard or basement, soft wet patches in the grass when it hasn't rained, or a water bill that's crept up without explanation. These aren't things to wait on. A slow failure gets worse, and the longer it goes, the more it costs.
A lot of older homes in DC and Bethesda were built with clay or cast iron sewer lines. I work on these constantly. Clay joints crack and shift over time. Cast iron corrodes from the inside out. If your home was built before 1970, there's a real chance the original sewer line is still in the ground.

Camera Inspection
Camera Inspection: What Mike Actually Shows You
I'll be direct about something. A lot of people arrive at this page already skeptical. They've heard stories about plumbers who run a camera, claim there's a big problem, and push for an expensive repair. That's a real thing that happens, and I understand why you'd be wary.

Here's how I do it. I run the camera and I show you the footage while we're standing there together. You see exactly what I see. Roots growing into a joint, a collapsed section, a crack, a bellied pipe, whatever is actually there. If the line looks fine, I'll tell you that. I'm not going to invent a problem to sell you a repair.
The camera footage is the diagnosis. I won't recommend excavation or lining based on a hunch. The footage either shows a problem that warrants repair or it doesn't. That's the whole point of doing it.
I've worked on enough aging infrastructure in Northwest DC and Bethesda to know what deteriorated pipe actually looks like versus what's just surface buildup or a minor root intrusion that a cleaning will handle. I'll tell you which one you're dealing with.
Repair Options
Trenchless Repair vs. Traditional Excavation
When people hear 'sewer line repair,' they picture a backhoe tearing up the front yard, the driveway, maybe the landscaping. Sometimes that's unavoidable. But often it's not.
Trenchless repair means fixing the pipe from the inside, without digging up the line. The most common method is pipe lining, where a flexible liner coated in resin is inserted into the existing pipe and cured in place. The result is essentially a new pipe inside the old one. No trench, minimal disruption to your yard.
Trenchless is an option when the pipe still has its basic shape intact. If a section has fully collapsed or the pipe has shifted badly out of alignment, lining won't work and excavation is the right call. I'd rather tell you that upfront than sell you a trenchless repair that won't hold.
- Plumbing rough-in and pipe relocation
- Drain line work and rerouting
- Toilet installation
- Faucet and valve installation
- Water damage assessment
When excavation is necessary, I'll walk you through exactly where we're digging and why. I don't dig more than the job requires.
Cost
Sewer Line Repair Costs in DC: What to Expect
I won't give you a number that doesn't mean anything. Sewer line repair costs vary depending on what the camera shows, how long the damaged section is, whether trenchless is an option, and how deep the pipe is buried.
A camera inspection is a separate cost from the repair, and that's intentional. You shouldn't have to commit to a repair before you know what's actually wrong. The inspection tells us both what we're dealing with.
Once I've run the camera and we've looked at the footage together, I can give you a specific number for the repair. No vague ranges, no surprise charges after the fact. If the scope changes once we're in the ground, I'll tell you before we proceed.
